Can HPV be treated? Many HPV infections typically clear spontaneously so no specific antiviral therapy is recommended. Most treatment is directed towards external genital warts or precancerous lesions which are caused by HPV. The external genital warts may be treated by patient-applied regimens, such as Podofilox, or provider-applied regiments, such as Cryotherapy. Patient-applied regimens may be preferred because they can be administered in the patient's home. If external genital warts are left untreated, they may increase in size and number. If the precancerous lesions are present, this should be managed by your provider based on severity of the lesion.
